Stamkos Scores 50th Goal

This evening Ontario-boy Steven Stamkos notched his NHL-leading 49th and 50th goals in a Lightning 6-1 victory over the Bruins. His 49th goal was at 3:06 of the second period and the 50th came at 11:43 of the third. It was the second time that Stamkos has achieved 50 or more goals in a season. The feat ties him with Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy, Alex Ovechkin and Joe Nieuwendyk as the only players to have recorded two 50 goal seasons by the age of 22. The first time that Stamkos scored 50 or more was in the 2009-2010 season when he had 51 goals, while last year he was five goals short with 45. The 50 goals gives him 12 more than Evgeni Malkin who has 38 for the year. It would be great if Stamkos could get 55 or more this year.

Stamkos was very humble when he spoke to reporters after the game, stating that he owed much to Martin St. Louis for making him a better player and helping him to achieve his milestones. Stamkos does not have the swelling pride of many NHL players (and pro athletes in general) and that is one reason why I really like him. You don’t have to strut around like a peacock and talk like you are “it.”

More important than Stamkos’ 49th and 50th goals was the 2 points for the win over the Bruins, because it gives the Lightning an opportunity to make the playoffs. However, it will be very difficult to catch Washington or Florida now, but not impossible. I am hoping that the Lightning can put a winning streak together and make the playoffs because they really gave the Bruins a run for their money last year.
